Tommy Walks Tall

Tommy Walks TallResearch has shown that bullying behaviour has a significant impact on the long term well being of children and adults. There is also a link between bullying and criminal and aggressive behaviour, therefore the impact stretches to the wider community as well.

The anti-bullying programme has been piloted with pupils from key stage 1 and key stage 2. The feedback from the sessions was very positive and results from the evaluation suggest that both the children involved and their teachers felt there was an overall improvement in pro-social behaviour following the intervention.

The Anti-Bullying package involves helping children to:

  • Identify and express their feelings verbally, this will help them to develop control over their impulses to react when they are frustrated. It also encourages them to speak up when somebody does something they don’t like.
  • Learn assertiveness skills. Ways of saying what they would or wouldn’t like without being aggressive.
  • Learn friendship skills of sharing and valuing others.
  • Learning to think about the impact of their behaviour on others.

Tommy Walks Tall Anti-Bullying Project

There are 6 sessions with the children where we talk about making friends, sharing, feelings and how to cope with them. We also talk about what children could do and who they should tell if they aren’t happy with something that happens to them at school. Children get an activity sheet about the things they have learned in each session.

The content for the 6 children’s sessions is as follows:

  • Session 1 - Making and sustaining friendships
  • Session 2 - Sharing and turn taking
  • Session 3 - Self esteem
  • Session 4 - Feelings and emotions
  • Session 5 - Assertiveness skills
  • Session 6 - What to do and who to tell

Some examples of the play interventions and activities used in the project are:

  • Circle time
  • Role play using puppets
  • Art and craft
  • Songs - Tommy Walks Tall Song
  • Games and puzzles
  • Turn taking games and sharing activities
  • Story telling
