What is Triple P?

The Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P) is an approach that promotes good communication and strong relationships between parents and children.

At a Triple P session you’ll discover and talk over new ways to build the relationship between you and your child, ways to achieve good behaviour and how to handle misbehaviour, especially when faced with difficult situations.

Triple P is a well researched parenting package which creates excellent outcomes for parents and children and it has a successful record with families from minority ethnic groups.

Triple P has been available in Stoke-on-Trent since January 2003 and has had a positive impact on many local parents, children and young people.

For general information on Triple P please go to the website www.triplep.net

Triple P has five key principles.

  • Ensuring a safe, interesting environment where children can explore, experiment and develop their skills.
  • Creating a positive learning environment by being available when children need help, care or attention.
  • Using assertive discipline by being consistent and acting quickly when children misbehave.
  • Having realistic expectations for children and for yourself as a parent.
  • Taking care of yourself as a parent and ensuring your personal needs are met.

What does Triple P offer?

Triple P offers suggestions and ideas to help parents:

  • Build positive relationships with their children.
  • Praise and encourage appropriate behaviour.
  • Teach children new skills.
  • Set rules and give instructions their children will follow.
  • Respond to misbehaviour immediately, consistently and decisively.
  • Use discipline strategies that work.
  • Take care of themselves as parents.

A variety of programmes are available depending on parents’ and children’s needs. There are also parenting videos, tip sheets, workbooks and other helpful materials available.

There is no one right way to be a parent, but Triple P offers information and support.

What can you expect from a Triple P Group?

The group will be friendly and you’ll be encouraged to join in as much or as little as you want. It may feel a bit awkward at first but you’ll start to feel more comfortable as you get to know people.

Groups meet for two hours each week and last for about four weeks. After this you can expect telephone contact for 3 weeks and finish with another group meeting.

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8
Group Group Group Group Individual Individual Individual Group
2 hours 2 hours 2 hours 2 hours 20 mins 20 mins 20 mins 2 hours

You won’t be judged or told what to do. You’ll have a chance to choose the ideas which suit you and your family then try them out at home.

Often parents who go to the groups develop friendships and keep on meeting to support each other after the group is finished.
